Reba McEntire Steals The Show At Super Bowl By Putting Country Twist On National Anthem
One of the highlights of last night’s Super Bowl came when the country music star Reba McEntire took to the field to perform the national anthem before the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49er. This was the first time McEntire performed at the Super Bowl in her decades-long career, and fans were ecstatic to see her put a country twist on “The Star Spangled Banner.”
McEntire Praised For National Anthem Performance
While wearing an ivory sequined blazer and black pants with sequined embroidery, McEntire, 68, performed “The Star Spangled Banner” beautifully with her signature country twang. Fox News reported that fans immediately took to social media to let McEntire know that her national anthem performance was a hit.
“Reba McEntire proving why she’s a living legend. No gimmicks needed,” one user commented, with another adding, “I had goose bumps. #Reba did a good job.”
“Reba does not age. HOW?!?!?!?!” a third user wrote. Another user stated, “Outstanding performance by Reba! Now that’s the way our National Anthem should be sung always.”
McEntire Gushes Over National Anthem Performance
In a press conference last Thursday, McEntire opened up about being “tickled to pieces” to be able to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl.
“I have never sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl,” she said at the time. “I am honored beyond words to be chosen to get to sing it. It means that I get to sing a very special song for all Americans, people all around the world who have really worked so hard for our freedom and to give us peace.”
“It’s not about me,” she added. “I’m the representation of this song, and I’m just honored to get to sing it. It’s a good one. I’ve been doing it for 50 years, and I’m really proud to get to sing it.”
McEntire went on to talk about how she was preparing for her big moment.
“I’ve been singing the national anthem in the shower, when we get in the car,” she explained. “Rex, my boyfriend, is a huge football fan, played all sports when he was going to school. And, so, he’ll say, ‘OK, sing it one more time.’ I’ll say, ‘I think I know the words real good right now, so I’m all right.'”
“But just to be prepared and know that everybody’s going to be singing it with me. That helps,” she continued. “If I know that they’re singing along, and they’re remembering and having fun, too, that’s easier on me. Just be prepared when you walk out there.”
Other Super Bowl Performances
The rapper Post Malone performed a stripped down version of “America the Beautiful” while accompanying himself on an acoustic guitar at the Super Bowl last night. The actress and singer Andra Day also performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which has become known as the black national anthem. It appears that most everyone can agree, however, that McEntire’s rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” was the highlight of these performances.
In the end, there is only one national anthem, and McEntire could not have performed it any better. What did you think about her rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner?” Let us know in the comments section.
